Silver at the European Champs - 15-07-2010

Catherine Linney and I were selected to represent Great Britain in our age group (Age 40-44) at the European Sprint Triathlon Age Group Championships 2010 in Athlone, Ireland. I got the silver medal and Cath took fourth place.

It was a 750m swim in the River Shannon; 20km bike ride on a flat out (straight into a head wind) and back course; 5km run (2 and ½ laps around the town centre of Athlone). All took part with the historical town centre and West bank of Athlone as the backdrop. The transitions were in the army barracks and included two long uphill sections. T1 and T2 took about 5 minutes in total so favouring runners!!

The swim was a near disaster for me as 1-min before the start, on the pontoon I went to put my goggles on and the lens came away from the frame. A violent form of tourettes suddenly descended on me as I realised there wasn’t enough time to get my spare pair. Somehow I managed to get the lens half back in but it meant 5 mins into the swim they were full of water so sighting was suspect to say the least.

Halfway round the bike course and I saw Cath – just in time for her to witness a very poor U-turn by me going into the kerb – don’t tell Andy Miles after I attended his corning course! I finished the bike in second place and was making in-roads into the winner but the finish came too soon!

I thought the event was great. The only slightly naff thing was having to go to an internet cafe after the event to find out the results.
